Although the previous welded gate made from spare parts has served adequately for about a decade, the gate has fallen into disrepair and must be replaced.
Indicated by the arrow is the old gate, to the left of the arrow is the completed replacement, but pretend you can't see it yet.
Quick thinking is what prompted me to locate an old Bee Box and scoop up what I could to create the square above-ground base. This created an integral footer / stem wall. The new impromptu design using stone rock on the outside, and concrete with steel-reinforcing in the center, created the new Gate Column.
The gate I wanted was inadvertently given away to another of the Rural King customers, so the yard attendant stated I could have the black one instead of the green or red one that I had wanted to buy the day prior. The reason why I could not purchase the one I wanted the day prior is due to the fact that Rural King had to ship from wherever their stock is elsewhere.
However I found out quickly why the black one is more expensive and has noticeable additional weight. I was later schooled by another Rural King representative that informed me that black indicates heavy-duty to keep out bulls (no kidding, he said that).
Well I only need a gate to keep the chickens back, but the new gate is heavy and will require something more durable than wood to hold it up.
This stone column should hold that gate up.
